Proper Motorcycle Winter Storage
Why You should NOT Store Your Motorcycle in Your Garage
1) Small Kids And Mischievous Pets
Even the most well-behaved kids and the best-trained pets can wreak havoc on your bike. It doesn’t take a lot to scratch, dent or damage a bike stored in your garage. There are also potential health risks that your bike could tip over and fall on your kids and/or pets in extreme circumstances.
2) Risk Of Fire
Many garages have washers and dryers, water heaters or a furnace which can ignite around toxic motorcycle fumes. Even if the motorcycle is completely drained of gas and oil, there’s still a chance for it to emit fumes. Major damage to your home or property due to a fire caused by your bike will not be covered by insurance because it’s considered self-induced.
3) Moisture Damage
Most garages lack climate-control and radiant heat, which eliminate temperature and humidity fluctuations. The benefit of this type of heating is that it prevents interior and exterior moisture damage from occurring.
4) Acts Of God
This includes extreme weather conditions causing air and water leaks / flooding that create dampness and temperature / humidity fluctuations. Rodents with access to the garage can eat away the bike’s wiring or damage its leather seats.
5) Increased Damage Risk
Garage-stored motorcycles have higher exposure to damage from kids, bikes, other cars and items falling from ceiling / wall storage. Avoid that risk with private indoor storage.
